J.D. Fergusson was a prolific artist and an associated member of the Scottish Colourist group. He produced a vast array of drawings, paintings and sculptures during a career that spanned over 60 years.
The collection houses over 5,000 works of art, including oil paintings, watercolours, drawings, sketchbooks and sculptures. The extensive archive includes photographs, letters and exhibition catalogues as well as Fergusson’s library, many personal items and the sofa that he had made for his very first studio in Edinburgh in the 1890s.
In 2010, the Fergusson collection was joined by that of his lifelong companion, the dancer Margaret Morris (1891–1980). The rich collection of costumes, artwork and archives gives a fascinating and unusually in-depth insight into all aspects of her career. As well as examples of her original costumes and costume designs, it includes drawings, paintings and sketchbooks.
